山口県の東部を流れ瀬戸内海に注ぎ込む清流錦川。創業以来八百新酒造の酒蔵はこの錦川 の河口近く、「雁木」があった河畔に位置しています。明治10年、八百屋新三郎が吉川藩 から藩主の別邸であった御茶屋跡と藩営の米蔵跡を譲り受けて“八百新”を創業し酒造りを 始めました。「雁木」とは船着き場の階段のある桟橋のことをいい、かつて、先人達が造 っていた酒の原料米は錦川の上流から下ってくる船で運ばれ。ここで水揚げされていまし た。
